Sokhumi State University is the successor of Sokhumi Pedagogical Institute Founded on 1932. At first, there were only two faculties in the University. Later other faculties were added and for the beginning of 1960’s, Pedagogical Institute became a leading educational and scientific center. In 1979, Sokhumi Pedagogical Institute was reestablished as Sokhumi State University. It functioned in the region of Abkhazia.From 1993, Sokhumi State University has continued functioning in Tbilisi. Nowadays, Sokhumi State University is in the leading position among Georgian State Universities. 

Faculties: Faculty of Law and Diplomacy; Faculty of Business and Social Sciences; Faculty of Education; Faculty of Humanities; Faculty of Natural Sciences, Mathematics, Technologies and Pharmacy.

The university has the necessary material resources for educational and research programs: two educational buildings, educational auditoriums, including modern designed labs, equipped with media projectors, necessary inventory for lecture and seminar work, laboratories, research institutes, conference halls, assembly halls, open sports ground, library, reading rooms, free academic staff workspace, information and communication technologies.
